Space
Space
During our Space topic, the children learnt about heliocentric and geocentric models of the solar system and where those theories came from. With this, the children learnt about Galileo (the astronomer) and Copernicus (the astronomer/mathematician) who both had the same theory that the solar system was heliocentric but the question is who was the greatest scientist of all time: Galileo or Copernicus? Listen to a couple of our Year 5 chat shows that the children planned, presented and filmed themselves to find out more about our solar system as well as the debate on who should be given the credit for the heliocentric theory Galileo or Copernicus?

Maidenhead Astronomical Society visit
Year 5 delved deeper into all things space with the interactive workshops led by visitors from the Maidenhead Astronomical Society. Children enjoyed being able to look at the real telescopes used to make observations of planets and they were able to spot sun spots. Wearing special glasses, children could stare at the sun and were in awe of what they saw! A great way to consolidate and expand our learning about space.
